after every vacation break from school i always feel revived as a student, i.e. i make it to all my classes, vow to continue to do so, clean, organize, schedule, etc. we shall see how long this lasts, as i am already feeling very drained.

some of today’s thoughts:

1. the girl who sat next to me in o-chem lecture spent basically the whole time texting LOUDLY on her clickety-click-click blackberry phone. she’d look up occasionally for two-minute periods, where she’d then turn to her friend and give a “what is even going on??” look. perhaps, just perhaps, you could stop texting and pay attention? though i must confess, i have probably been this girl at one time or another.
2. the people in my o-chem discussion drive me absolutely nuts. they are idiocy-holding human vessels. there are these three girls who just talk the whole time at normal-conversation volume while he is teaching, or even while he’s answering one of their own questions. and they are just STUPID! and they’re those kinds of girls who treat the professor (the kindest, cutest, shyest old man EVER) with zero respect – “wait, how did that even get to that?” “where did that come from?” “no, not that one….THAT ONE…no, to your left…to your LEFT…bitchbitchbitch.”
3.  i kind of promised myself in my head that my pursuance of creative things in general (so sad) will depend on the response i get from my spanish professor from my essay about “el hoyo”.  there were two possibilities for the essay: a reactionary-type paper, or a creative approach.  i, bypassing all my nervousness and doubt, opted for the creative approach, and was quite pleased with what i came up with.  so yeah, i kinda decided in the back of my head to put my future kinda in this paper…and guess what?  she LOVED it.  she actually even said, “te felicito.” (congratulations).  and now i’m all in a future tizzy.  which is nothing new, except i actually have to decide on my schedule for summer and this coming fall by the end of the week.

i have to keep remembering that this all is not some medieval torture technique (read, write, repeat x 1,000,000) – that it is LEARNING. and that I LIKE LEARNING. i am not a homework machine – the words i write actually MEAN something, they are not merely there for word count. my brain is healthy (more or less), functioning and absorbing knowledge – how cool is that? these are the ANSWERS to my million QUESTIONS. I LIKE LEARNING.

amor y paz,
steph

i managed to get kanye tickets after 5 hours – floor, 18th row! SO EXCITED.

also, the WILDCATS made it to the ncaa championship! yessssss. guess who did not… aswho?

i thought of another “the lab” episode: “seminar day”, where some scientific goods company comes and does a presentation on something super-boring and actually sleep-inducing (“effective ways to improve your western blot images”, etc. etc.), but everyone in the lab comes because a) you get free pizza and b) you can sign up for free samples of scientific goods.

i am reading oscar wilde’s “the importance of being earnest”, and it is fabulous. “i really don’t see anything romantic in proposing. it is very romantic to be in love. but there is nothing romantic about a definite proposal. why, one may be accepted. one usually is, i believe. then the excitement is all over. the very essence of romance is uncertainty. if ever i get married, i’ll certainly try to forget the fact.”

a trip to california is in the works, and i’m really hoping it works out.

also, my best friend and i were stuck in tucson by ourselves saturday night, so what did we do but get silly-drunk by ourselves? so much so that priya threw up? and then we created frankenstein?

my new life motto is: “would it really happen any other way?”
i.e. “steph, it’s spring break and we’re in the ilc.” “would it really happen any other way?”

i am feeling more restless than ever.

i am reminded of how much i love “breakfast at tiffany’s”. i re-watched saturday and every time i see it again, some new part i don’t explicitly remember crops up and just resonates. this time, it was about “real phonies”. i would elaborate but my elbows are sore from typing on my sister’s bed.

amor,

steph

drink from 11 pm – 2:30 am,  life-talked with prita, mark, and priya from 2:30 am – 4:30 am, homework from 4:30-5:30 am. sleep until 8:15 am, go to class (got 100% on my spanish midterm, woohoo!), go to my lab meeting, sit around various computer labs around campus with priya trying to get kanye tickets. currently in the ilc eating my takeout noodles and repeatedly varying from hitting f5 key and clicking the refresh button. spring break is here and i am sitting in the study center where time does not exist…voluntarily.

in other news, i also aced my portuguese midterm. my science classes? varying grades of b, c, and d. hmmm.

in my head, there is a show called “the lab”, very akin to the popular nbc comedy “the office”. people who work in labs are quirky. having worked in two labs now, quite a collection of episodes have been written in my head, including:

“first day”: “oh, we didn’t know the interns started today, otherwise we wouldn’t have schedules the killing and tissue harvesting of 30+ mice today.”

“holiday party”: where each lab at the institute was responsible for submitting one ornament crafted of materials around the lab…someone made a paraffin wax nativity scene.

“staff award day”: ua staff council came and presented one of the doctors with an award, complete with an oversized check printout, balloons and cake. it was also someone in the lab’s birthday. pretty much all i did all day was eat celebratory cake, and it was fabulous.

“media lunch day”: newspapers from around the phoenix valley came and interviewed 30ish nervous interns. they had me pose in a picture where i pipetted water into water.

still…no…tickets….
